Their takes on the young princes are a breath of fresh air, with Jack’s William already seen battling with his sense of duty and Freddie bringing Harry’s sense of humour and a little bit of chaos to the forefront.

And their chemistry with Kristen is absolutely gorgeous, especially during the final beautiful scene.

She's also become a heck of an actress. Spencer played well in Venice, though there were a few dissenting voices.

 

Stewart is well aware of the mixed reaction. 'I definitely knew that the chances of 'mucking this up', as a Brit might say, were far greater than doing a 'good job',' she said.

 

'But I thought it was worth it. I've been working as an actor for a long time [since the age of nine], and it's really rare to find things that make you feel this way.' Getting inside that head, she added, had imbued her with a 'spooky kind of power'.

 

When agreeing to the project, Stewart said she'd braced herself for the 'daunting and exceptionally harrowing experience' of recreating one of the lowest periods of Diana's life. But a totally unexpected 'takeaway' of the experience was 'joy'.

 

She tried to explain. 'She just really did have this overriding, disarming, beautiful energy.' The decisions Diana was grappling with were 'earth-shattering'. And yet 'inhabiting her made me feel taller, and made me feel I could dance. I felt her power in a f***ing beautiful way'.

Last night saw the premiere at the London Film Festival of Spencer, easily the most credible biopic of Diana, Princess of Wales, yet to make it to the screen.

 

It’s not the script that makes it so good, however. It’s the sumptuous photography by Claire Mathon; the bracing, antsy music by Jonny Greenwood, Pablo Larrain’s hypnotic direction; and a fabulous Kristen Stewart, in a role very likely to provide her first Oscar nomination.

 

Counter-intuitive though it might seem, Stewart’s casting is Spencer’s major triumph. As an actress, she could hardly feel less establishment, less like a royal. There’s something fraught and rebellious in her very being.

 

There’s a rebel-chic quality to this portrait which Stewart sharply understands and milks deliciously, with that edge of camp that knows what it’s doing. The film is not perfect, but the irreverence and cheek of it, and the empathetic focus on this alienated heroine of her own life story, make it the only essential Diana film there is.

Kristen Stewart was excellent in #Spencer for many reasons, but mainly because she captured the love Diana had for her sons and how even through her darkest of times, all she wanted to do was be a great mother.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful Claire Mathon’s cinematography is, which is mesmerizing to witness, or if Pablo Larra237;n’s direction is nearly perfect in the way he let us take in Diana’s most vulnerable moments. Spencer needs Kristen Stewart to tell this story as much as Stewart needs Diana in return to get something out of her system and getting to see her embody this role might just be the single most impressive thing I’ve seen in film all year.
