На CineEurope в Барселоне показали первый трейлер

WB showed off the first trailer for its Christmas DC release, Aquaman.

 

The film tells the tale of Arthur Curry who learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.

 

The James Wan-directed, Jason Momoa-starrer will see the official trailer drop online soon.

В глаза бросилась и необычно яркая картинка, не так часто встречающаяся у фильмов от DC.

DC team breaks silence on James Wan's Aquaman: ‘It’s extraordinary’

The team at Warners Bros. and DC are really confident that their next big release, Aquaman, is going to swim not sink.

 

EW exclusively spoke to the film’s producers and the studio’s executive brass about the next title in the DC Extended Universe coming Dec. 21. The film starring former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa as the half-Atlantean, half-human superhero has been shrouded in secrecy and has only publicly released a couple photos so far, but there are hints that a trailer could be coming soon. The movie represents the first superhero film by director James Wan, best known for his work on The Conjuring and Insidious films, yet also tackled Furious 7 — the top-grossing film of the Fast & Furious franchise.

 

“James has done an incredible job with his team,” says Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich. “The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”

 

One of the film’s producers, Peter Safran, tells us the film has, “got the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision. I think it’s an extraordinary step in DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”

 

The storyline is largely being kept under wraps, but it’s expected to introduce Arthur Curry as a surface-dwelling outcast who battles his half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) over the fate of Atlantis. Expect to see sights such as the seven undersea kingdoms, giant octopi and Atlanteans riding great white sharks into battle.

 

DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns (who recently announced he was exiting the company for a writing and producing deal) knows plenty about Aquaman, having penned some of the comics in addition to co-writing the story for the standalone film. “The underwater stuff has never been executed like this before,” Johns tells us. “The visual effects shots coming in are just beautiful. James can switch modes from horror to big bright colorful action to really emotional scenes. He’s so able to hit all these different genres.”

So, how is Aquaman director James Wan going to solve that underwater dialogue problem, anyway?

 

You’ll recall that in Justice League, director Zack Snyder had Mera (Amber Heard) create a giant air pocket underwater so she could have a chat with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa). Fans drowned that scene with criticism, noting that Atlanteans don’t need air to talk. Wan then teased on Twitter he would handle underwater dialogue differently in his upcoming stand-alone movie, which has caused all sorts of speculation as to how he might pull that off.

 

EW got to see about 15 minutes of the new film and noticed something. The characters … when they’re underwater … they just …

 

“People are overthinking it,” Wan says. “They’re just gonna talk!”

 

Precisely. Characters underwater speak normally in the film despite being underwater. Wan then adds a tad bit of a visual effect as Atlanteans speak, suggesting sound waves, but that’s all. It’s a rather brilliantly simple and naturalistic-looking solution to a problem that isn’t wasn’t actually that big of a problem in the first place.

 

Underwater scenes are an enormous part of the new film and were the biggest draw for Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring franchise), who was most excited by the challenge of creating an entirely new fantastical world.

The next was tapping acclaimed director James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious, Furious 7) to deliver a fantasy film coming Dec. 21 that’s unlike any we’ve seen before.

 

“The water world my movie takes place in is so separate and so far apart from previous DC movies it’s like I’m making my own sci-fi fantasy film,” Wan says. “This is a whole new underwater world nobody has seen before in live action.”

 

There are Atlanteans riding great white sharks, giant octopi, seven different underwater kingdoms, trench-dwelling cannibals, and even sea dragons (Wan’s fearsome take on the oft-mocked image of Aquaman riding a seahorse in the Super Friends cartoons).

 

Yet the film’s biggest surprise might be Momoa, who gives a humor-filled performance that finally brings the actor’s actual larger-than-life personality to the big screen. “Rarely has a superhero character been married to the real-life actor as much as Aquaman and Jason Momoa,” executive producer Peter Safran declares. “He’s authentically from two worlds, he’s this real physical specimen, he’s got this humor which he’s never been allowed to play before — in every regard he is Aquaman.”

 

This week’s issue dives into the world of Atlantis with the behind-the-scenes story of Momoa’s casting, interviews with Wan and the cast, and exclusive photos revealing the underwater world.
