I mean, watching a movie helps a lot, so why not watch it while you're at it) Where's your eyes as you stick to listening?

I meant watching subtitles)

Well, I'm studying, too - but at an American university. Currently enjoying holidays at home :) But I dream of going on exchange to Nottingham Trent University. My friend from England told me it's a lovely place :)

So you want a degree from 2 Universities?

Not a degree, in fact it'll be a pass-fail system for one semester.

But yes, I'm graduating from two universities - one of them Russian. And tomorrow I'm going there to check information about exams. Arriving from one exam week to another really sucks.

It is so interesting to study in UK! What is your major if it's not a secret)))?

I meant that there are 2 different ways of your congition. THe first one - when you're listening to audio track only. The second - when you're listening but you can describe and recognize words using subtitles. Bur you must recognize words only by listening

Honestly, I never tried subtitles, because I see no need for them.

It just so happens - I learned the language really fast, first watching familiar movies in English (with the lines, that I know by heart), then I slowly started to watch unfamiliar movies - and perfectly understood everything.

Now I can watch a totally unfamiliar english-language movie and enjoy it without any language trouble at all. It just came so easy to me, I was surprised, that people actually have trouble with it. Especially movie-loving people.

Subtitles can be handy only in one case - if there some unfamiliar scientific or specific term in the movie. Basicly I just don't mind about it during the first screening: I know plenty words, so eventually I will figure it out. So, after watching, I can just for the curiosity search an unfamiliar word in the web - and there's a practical use of subtitles: you can spell the word right - and google it without a hitch.

Of course, if you comfortable - you can watch the movie with subtitles on, but I suggest you to MOVE on. And learn to identify the words by sound only.

It sure needs a lot of practice, but it also will help you to watch a movie without any language thinking. Like it is a russian movie. And you'll can enjoy it the simular way, as an american audience

 I've seen it allready, thanks. No, I'm not a pilot (unfortunately).

Let me correct by myself:

When I was writing it I was going to bed :D - is it right?

On the contrary, I watch films with subtitles. Honestly, it's a little bit inconveniently, because you should pay attention both at an action and on subtitles. For quite some time now I try to watch films without subtitles, for me it's quite hard:D. Recently I have looked "Casino" and "Prestige" in English, that was great!

Americans have specific accent which is distinct from British English. For Americans' speech, it's natural to pronounce words with drawl and twang, that's way in fluent speech especially, it's hard to get them.

A-level is great, my friend is studying in IB - that is really painful :D

I love music, too - because of my education in music school and because it's my mother's profession. And what about aviation ?

Photography is quite interesting, but I noticed that many of my friends-photographers can draw. Do you like drawing :)?

P.S. Sorry that I disappeared without a word - fell asleep on my laptop.

I meant watching subtitles)

I don't know. Isn't it a bit tedious and distracting, trying to discern, recognize and synchronize the spoken and the written words? Oh, and don't forget following the movie )) It's like typing with one finger, shifting your eyes from the keyboard to the screen every time. Ugh, lame) I suggest watching the movie and taking in what you can, be it 50 or just 25 per cent, that's enough to follow the movie, because the screen tells you the story beyond words. Then, if you have REAL need for subtitles, you resort to them (if you have time, hehe, but a better option is to watch another movie)). If you can afford chain-watching, do it... You can always clear up the moments of interest by reading something extra on the movie, reviews or comments, anything.

You know there are different genres like fantasy, criminal, comedy and more. And each of em includes different concentrate of dialogs and information. For ex I watched a drama "Garage" - there was Irish accent and I couldnt understand it w\o subtitles. T'was a very specific for me. And other situation is when im watching some action or crime scene stuff. For those genres i neednt subs. But the point is that I dont prefer for watching such genres)

WELL I used to watch movies in English

Totally, you can :)

Has anyone seen the Infidel? I'm so glad the knowledge of English allowed me to watch this touching comedy, don't know whether it is dubbed in Russian now.

American movies and without subtitles? Have you ever noticed that americans are mumbling?

Americans usually speak fast and they got lots of accents (nothern/southern/afroamerican/redneck e.c.t.).

Mostly they mumble as much, as us in OUR movies.

But the brits - it's another story: they talk REALLY fast, and you've got to pay SERIOUS attention.

It's the matter of experience both with American and British English. I don't have problems with any of them in movies, but my stepfather is from Kent and usually I can't understand a word he says :D Compared to common Englishmen diction, actors are perfect.
