Williams was unavailable for this story as he is finishing work on the score for Spielberg’s next film, “The Fabelmans,” expected to record next month in Los Angeles. The film, inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood in Arizona, is slated for a Nov. 23 release.

 

“Fabelmans” marks their 29th film collaboration since “The Sugarland Express,” their first, in 1974. Seventeen of Williams’ 52 Oscar nominations (an all-time record for scoring) are for Spielberg films, including three of his five wins (“Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Schindler's List”)

He shot The Fabelmans for Spielberg in the summer and fall of 2021, and the role was a welcome pivot from the darkness of The Batman, though emotionally challenging for different reasons. Dano plays a character named Burt Fabelman who is inspired by Spielberg’s father, Arnold, an engineer with whom Steven had a strained relationship for many years after his parents divorced, a subject he has explored in his films with absent or distracted fathers, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.

 

“Somebody like Steven making a film about his life and you’re playing a version of his father, … the stakes felt really high,” Dano says. Arnold died in the summer of 2020 at age 103 and, “in some ways it was a heavy cloak to bear because of that,” Dano says. “You’re embodying one of the most important, influential, complicated figures in [spielberg’s] life. It was incredible to see how much of this was in his work the whole time. He’s sharing a piece of himself that I find very moving. There’s a real gift in it, when somebody of that stature and at that level of artistry is willing to do that.”

 

After all the brooders and the weirdos and the charismatic sociopaths, Dano is playing someone that feels closer to himself in The Fabelmans. “[The Batman] closes a certain type of work that I’ve done, and The Fabelmans is the next chapter,” he says. “Sometimes people are like, ‘Oh, you always give these really big performances.’ Sometimes they’re like, ‘Oh, you always give these very quiet performances.’ I don’t know what people think of me, but even though the relationships are complicated in The Fabelmans, the character is beautiful, and I think his heart is beautiful. And so after doing the Riddler, it was nice to go work with that part of myself that was more about being a parent and a husband than … you know.”

“It’s a very emotional movie that tells the story of Spielberg from the age of seven to eighteen. It deals with his family, with his parents, conundrums with his sisters, but primarily deals with his passion for movie-making.”

 

He continued to tease the film saying that it would explore how Spielberg’s passion for cinema evolved and developed and how “it helped him go through that difficult period of being a teenager.” Furthermore, The Fabelmans will explore elements of the director’s relatively conservative, Jewish upbringing and exposure to anti-Semitism in his early life. It will also touch on young love, parental divorce, and early formative relationships. “It’s a very beautiful, beautiful personal movie. It’s very revealing about Steven’s life and who he is as a filmmaker.”

Did you get everything you wanted? The only film that seems to have gotten away is Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans”?

 

That one got away from everyone. Everybody wanted to see it. But it seemed that the release date was too far ahead. Then we got this surprise announcement [that it’s going to Toronto]. I have to admit that, in this case, it was a bit unpleasant. All of us would have expected more clarity from Universal. You can say, ‘We are aiming for a different type of marketing campaign.’ But to let us know [ahead of the Toronto announcement] would not have been a bad thing. [barbera laughs]. That said, we’ve worked very well with Universal on other films.

THE FABELMANS had a test screening last night and to the surprise of nobody,

it sounds like Steven Spielberg knocked it out of the park again.

For the first time, Steven Spielberg is debuting one of his movies at TIFF. How did you land “The Fabelmans”?

 

He doesn’t often go to film festivals with his films because he doesn’t generally need the awareness building they provide. But this is a very personal film for him. It’s a great environment to launch “The Fabelmans.” It’s different from a typical Spielberg blockbuster, but it is just as easily impactful in terms of the emotional effect it’s going to have on people. If you love movies, this is going to be a very powerful film for you to watch. I’m excited that it’s launching in an environment that celebrates cinema.
