Warner Bros. reports that The Great Gatsby took in $3.25 million from Thursday evening/midnight shows. That's a solid start for the glitzy drama. Critics have not been kind to Gatsby, but movie-goers seem to be shrugging that off thus far.

Friday Update #2: Early reports indicate that The Great Gatsby could end up somewhere between $43 million-$45 million during its debut frame based on a healthy Friday total of $15 million or so. Check back for more updates.

Meanwhile, Tyler Perry Presents Peeples is off to a rough start. The comedy is looking at around $6 million for the entire weekend after what's shaping up to be a mediocre $2 million Friday haul.

FRIDAY 6:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: Warner Bros‘ The Great Gatsby (3,035 theaters) domestic grosses just keep climbing upward. My sources’ latest estimates for the film are $18M-$22M for today, including Thursday late shows and Friday midnights, and $55M-$58M for opening weekend. The “X factor” will be Mother’s Day, which could contribute to a huger-than-normal Sunday for the romantic drama co-financed by Village Roadshow. Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3 (which still has the biggest theater count at 4,253) is looking like $20M today and $75M-$80M this weekend for a terrific hold on #1 again. And the only other major newcomer today is Lionsgate’s Peeples (2,031 theaters), a “Tyler Perry Presents” comedy not written or directed by him. Its grosses are disastrous: $1M today for a $3.5M-$5M weekend.

SATURDAY 3 PM, 3RD UPDATE: There’s more good news at the box office for Summer 2013. Domestic grosses for Warner Bros‘ The Great Gatsby (3,035 theaters) just kept climbing upward Friday though audiences gave it a ‘B’ CinemaScore. My sources’ latest estimates for the 3D tentpole are $19M for Thursday late shows, Friday midnights, and its opening day total and a $53M first weekend. The ‘X’ factor will be Mother’s Day, which could contribute to a huger-than-normal Sunday for the romantic drama co-financed by Village Roadshow and based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic novel. The #1 film is still Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3 (which has the biggest theater count at 4,253) looking like $19M Friday (-72% from last Friday’s huge opening) and $67M this weekend (-62%) for a terrific hold. (Last year The Avengers made an incredible $103M in its second weekend…) Before Friday, IM3 grossed $794M — international cume $581.6M and domestic $212.4M. Yowza! The only other major newcomer is Lionsgate’s Peeples (2,031 theaters), a ‘Tyler Perry Presents’ comedy not written or directed by him but by Tina Gordon Chism. Its grosses are disastrous just 1.5th its budget of $15M: $1.1M Friday for a $3.1M weekend.
