Best Documentary Feature: “Porcelain War”
Spoiler: “No Other Land”

Bottom Line:

his year, the documentaries are hard to assess. There is no obvious frontrunner. The consensus pick may be Sundance U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize and DGA winner “Porcelain War,” (Picturehouse)) which shows three artists continuing to create porcelain figurines in the midst of the Ukraine War. Artist-turned-soldier Slava Leontyev sent their video footage, including GoPro action cameras and aerial drones, back to American filmmaker Brendan Bellomo. The movie also features hand-drawn and CGI animation.

With no distributor in sight, critics’ favorite “No Other Land” wound up being released by sales and marketing company Cinetic Media. The collaboration between Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers about the systematic Israeli destruction of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, as well as the growing friendship between an Israeli journalist and Palestinian activist, has been playing theaters stateside and abroad, and won the IDA and Indie Spirit awards.

Anonymous 2025 Oscar Ballot #7

Цитата

Best Picture:

I thought it was a really interesting year with a lot of really good films, but not one film that I would call a “masterpiece.” I’m going to go in reverse here…

10. “Wicked” – I really don’t get that movie. For me, it’s the one film this year that’s really so stiff and banal. A lot of the craftsmanship that went into it is good, but it’s extremely conventional. And especially when you’ve got something like “Emilia Pérez” that is more imaginative, this just seems quite boring.
9. “Emilia Pérez” – I liked it more than “Wicked.” It was wildly ambitious, even if everything didn’t work for me.
8. “A Complete Unknown” – The craftsmanship is so strong, and Chalamet is really great as Bob Dylan. From number 8 on, I’d say these were all really good movies.
7. “Nickel Boys” – This was a very special cinematic experience because of the subjective approach to the storytelling. I’m really glad it made the top ten because it didn’t have the big blockbuster promotion budget some contenders get, so hopefully, more people will see it now that it’s been nominated.
6. “Dune: Part Two” – This was definitely better than the first one. It was surprisingly emotional. I find it very weird that Denis is not among the Best Director nominees because he has such a strong vision. He’s able to do this thing that’s so rare in Hollywood, which is to do these big blockbusters but with a lot of personality and unique artistic merit.
5. “I’m Still Here” – It was such a pleasant surprise to see this among the top ten. Really strong, personal, powerful film telling a historical story in a very emotional way. Sometimes, it’s hard when you do a historical movie; it can feel like a dry costume drama, but this felt very urgent and emotional. And I was so happy to see Fernanda Torres get a nomination for Best Actress.
4. “The Substance” – I needed to put this in the top 4 even though I probably thought “I’m Still Here” was a better film. I’m just so happy it was nominated for Best Picture. It was such a crazy, overwhelming film, and I love that it’s here at the Oscars. You’ve got this glamorous film race with this nasty body horror film that I think is making such a bold statement. She’s put it into a body horror context, but it’s saying a lot about the world we live in.
3. “Anora” – I thought this was an incredibly entertaining film. I thought some of Sean Baker’s previous films were maybe a little tighter, where this feels a little more uneven and a bit too long, but it’s still very much Sean Baker and really a joy, and the ending is surprisingly emotional. And the acting is top-notch. Sean Baker seems like a great guy.
2. “Conclave” – This was really intense, and it’s amazing to make a movie that’s put in that context and still so riveting at the same time because it feels like it should be the most kind of stiff, numb environment, and then they make it so gripping and powerful. And that score. For me, the score is the score for the year. Just brilliant.
1. “The Brutalist” – I actually wouldn’t call this a masterpiece, but it’s a really, really great film. It’s a work of art that is ambitious and just really something special. I was moved, and I was torn apart, sometimes not even believing what I was seeing. It was this year’s “There Will Be Blood” where you feel like this is a really robust, unique statement on so many themes and topics. It’s the kind of film that you’d think wouldn’t even be made today. Something you’d think would happen 20-30 years ago. The score is also amazing, and it has hands down the best opening of the year with the upside-down Statue of Liberty.

Best Director:
Sean Baker. I really loved how he’s been able to create his own movie world, this kind of special way of making movies that feels just so much like him. Of course, you can say that about a lot of different directors, but I’ve been really happy to see someone like Baker making a movie like this on his own terms, to be so himself through all this. He has a very personal vision that deserves recognition.

Best Actress:
I was choosing between Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Torres. It was a hard call because those three really delivered something special, and I really agonized over this. I ended up voting for Demi Moore. I thought it was so brave of her to do a performance like this. Often, when you think about acting, it’s about the eyes, the face, and when they talk. But here, that performance is about the whole body, the way she looks and moves; it’s just such a fully realized full-body performance. I was amazed by the lengths she was willing to go to. In the end, when she’s turning into an abstract monster, you can still tell that it’s her. It’s a performance with so many levels, and it’s bold and brave.

Best Actor:
Adrien Brody. But I don’t understand why Daniel Craig didn’t get nominated. I see James Bond as crazy, eccentric, and emotional? That deserves a nomination. But Adrien Brody, that’s a wonderful performance. It’s so weird as a sound person to hear this controversy about AI being used in his performance. I have many bad things to say about AI…generative AI, that is, but in sound, everybody, like EVERYBODY, uses AI to clean up dialogue. It’s a great tool.  I doubt there’s a single film this year where there wasn’t some AI used to clean up the dialogue. But that’s the sound nerd’s perspective on that whole story.

Best Supporting Actress:
I was close to voting for Isabella Rossellini, but I felt like the role was just so small compared to some of the others. So, I ended up voting for Monica Barbaro. I had never really noticed her as an actress before this. Her musical performances were so great, and she had this fascinating energy that was hard to nail down; she was very tough and emotional at the same time. Especially that live performance where she turns away the mic, and it’s like, “Wow, that’s a star in the making.”

Best Supporting Actor:
Yura Borisov. I thought the way that character evolved through that film was amazing. Going from this kind of annoying bodyguard type to being very emotional and lovable at the end. That kind of character development is really hard to nail. That’s part of the reason I voted for Sean Baker for Best Director, too, for the way he develops characters throughout the film.

Best Original Screenplay:
“The Substance.” I thought that the way it was able to be political and philosophical and funny and batshit crazy horror at the same time was very entertaining. That it’s even among the nominees is so amazing. I love that and really wanted to support it.

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Sometimes, in this category, I think it’s important to vote for people who do something bold and ambitious that you haven’t seen before. So, I voted for “Nickel Boys.” To be able to write a film in a way that could be shot in this very poetic and abstract way, the act of actually writing that kind of screenplay must have been incredibly difficult.

Best Animated Feature:
“Flow.” I love good visual storytelling like that.

Best Documentary Feature:
I wish they started nominating ten movies instead of five for this category. I feel like every year, this is the best field we get. But I ended up voting for “No Other Land.” Such an urgent, moving film. Very rough around the edges, but it really hit me hard. I remember leaving the theater and almost feeling a pain in my body. “Sugarcane” was probably my other favorite. Very moving. Just a terrifying story. I liked that the films this year were very different in their approach. “Black Box Diaries” was very intimate, almost journal-like. And this collage style with the soundtrack to a coup. I really, really missed “The Remarkable Life Of Ibelin” among these five. That was one of the most moving films I saw this past year.

Best International Feature Film:
“I’m Still Here.” This thing is emotional and historical at the same time. I loved “Flow” and would’ve voted for it here, too, but I voted for it for animated. I also really liked “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.” It’s a really surprising mix of family drama and political thriller.

Best Cinematography:
“Nosferatu.” I thought that film was so cinematically ambitious and wild, and it had the most amazing images. I love this way of making a movie that feels so cinematic and feels like it has so many effects, but still feels like it’s all done in camera. It feels like watching a movie from 1925 but done in 2025 with the most advanced technology. The way they let the images do all the storytelling in so many scenes. Like this scene in the forest where the horse wagon comes and picks him up. Basically, I could hang every image in the film on the wall as a painting.

Best Costume Design:
“Nosferatu.” My old horror heart had to.

Best Film Editing:
I thought “Conclave” was just so precise in its editing. As you can tell, my votes are really spread out. It felt like everything in the storytelling hit exactly where it should. It makes this complex story feel very easy to understand and, at the same time, makes the emotions so complex that you really care for the characters. And the way the film is structured, so that it’s also a countdown. It’s really hard as a picture editor to juggle all those things.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling:
“Nosferatu.” I loved the kind of physical presence even of the extras, not just Orlok. Even in those scenes going to the castle, you have the Romanian extras, and everything felt so gritty and part of this environment, and it was not heavy-handed. Somehow, everything was natural and crazy at the same time.

Best Production Design:
I probably should’ve picked “The Brutalist,” but I ended up with “Dune: Part Two.” The way that whole world was built– there’s so much talk about Greig Fraser’s cinematography, but I actually think that movie stands out visually more for the production design. These massively built environments feel so real, and I love how tactile they are. A very unique perspective on sci-fi world-building. I would’ve voted for any of the five, though, except for “Wicked.”

Best Original Score:
“Conclave.” It’s crazy that Volker is doing this just the year after “All Quiet On The Western Front.” You can tell he has a very strong vision for his music that tells a powerful story. And the way it’s been used is incredible. It made me sad note to vote for “The Brutalist” because that was also great *imitates “The Brutalist’s” buh buh buh buh horns.* I’m still mad, though, that Reznor and Ross weren’t nominated for “Challengers.” That’s ridiculous.

Best Original Song:
I loved the score and the song from “Sing Sing.” I wish the score had been nominated. That song was wonderful. I was quite moved by it. The thing with “Emilia Pérez” is I don’t feel like the quality of the songs was as good as they should’ve been for trying to tell that story as a musical. I thought the way they were arranged was good and creative, but the songs themselves weren’t that strong.

Best Sound:
“Dune: Part Two.” Sometimes, when you have a sequel, it feels like you’re voting for the same work again, but this felt so different and the way it used silences in a film of this size really stood out to me. There are so many amazing soundscapes, and they are very gritty. I remember hearing Richard King say that Denis said it should feel like a documentary. It is gritty and rough and, at the same time, very advanced work, especially because Richard King got hired late into the film, so he put this together in a short time frame. And, of course, the way Hans Zimmer’s music melds together with the rest of the soundscape was wonderful.

Best Visual Effects:
“Dune: Part Two,” of course.
