British author and screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro (“Never Let Me Go”); Italian director Leonardo di Costanzo, who was in Venice last year with prison drama “The Inner Cage”; Argentina’s Mariano Cohn, also in Venice last year with comedy “Official Competition” starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas; and Spanish director and producer Rodrigo Sorogoyen, whose film “Mother” screened in Venice’s Horizons section in 2019, round off the Venice jury panel.

Olivia Wilde, Harry Styles, Timothee Chalamet and Cate Blanchett Set to Bring New Movies to Venice

As Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera continues to see films and tinker with his selection before announcing the Lido lineup next week, several high-profile titles have emerged as either locked in or highly likely to be launching from the Lido.

 

As previously anticipated by Variety, U.S. studios and streamers are set to be disembarking at the fest in full force. Warner Bros. will be launching steamy psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” which is Olivia Wilde’s second directorial effort and stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The pic is one of two movies starring the latter pop star to come out this fall (the other being Amazon Studios’ “My Policeman”).

 

Focus Features will be on the Lido with Todd Field’s “Tar,” which teams the “In the Bedroom” director with Cate Blanchett as the fictional Lydia Tar, one of the world’s greatest conductors and the first female conductor of a major German orchestra. Blanchett is a Venice regular who presided over the festival’s main jury in 2020.

 

From Netflix, Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe drama “Blonde,” starring Bond girl Ana de Armas (“No Time to Die”) as the Hollywood icon, is also understood to be locked in.

 

And highly likely to be Venice-bound are Netflix’s Don DeLillo adaptation “White Noise” from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwig, Adam Driver and Jodie Turner-Smith; Alejandro G. Inarritu’s “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” which details the story of a Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker going through an existential crisis; and Romain Gavras’ modern tragedy “Athena,” co-written by the French “The World is Yours” director with “Les Miserables” filmmaker Ladj Ly.

 

Amazon-owned MGM will be in Venice with Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” starring Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell as cannibal lovers on a road trip across America in the 1980s.

 

Amazon will also be launching its first Argentinian original film from the Lido, the political drama “1985,” directed by auteur Santiago Mitre whose “Paulina” and “The Summit” went to Cannes. “1985” is the true story of how public prosecutor Julio Strassera, a young lawyer, and his inexperienced legal team dared to prosecute the heads of Argentina’s bloody military dictatorship in a battle against odds and a race against time, braving bomb and death threats.

 

Also locked into a Venice slot is Italian director Andrea Pallaoro’s indie production “Monica” starring transgender actor Trace Lysette (“Transparent”) as a transgender woman who returns home to the Midwest to care for her dying mother, played by Patricia Clarkson.

 

Though both “Bones” and “Monica” fly the Italian flag they are set in the U.S. and, curiously, both films where shot in Ohio.

 

Paul Schrader’s new feature “The Master Gardener” is strongly tipped for an out-of-competition Venice berth, given that the U.S. director and screenwriter will be honored on the Lido with the 2022 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. “Gardener” tells the story of horticulturist Narvel Roth, played by Joel Edgerton, who tends to a beautiful Louisiana estate owned by a wealthy widow played by Sigourney Weaver. Things take a dark turn when the widow’s troubled great niece arrives on the scene.

 

 

Standout titles from elsewhere around the world that are Lido-bound comprise recently re-incarcerated Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi’s drama “No Bears,” which reportedly interweaves two parallel love stories both thwarted by obstacles that reflect life in Iran these days.

 

South Korean director Hong Sang Woo’s latest film “Walk Up” is a definite possibility, as are laureled Japanese director Koji Fukada’s “Love Life,” which follows a happily married woman who decides to care for her son’s long-lost father when he reappears, deaf, ill and homeless.

 

Also strongly tipped from Asia is revered Japanese icon and former Venice prize winner Takeshi Kitano’s “Kubi” (aka “Neck”), a period actioner based on Kitano’s 2019 novel of the same title.

 

From France, Rebecca Zlotowski’s drama “Les Enfants Des Autres” (“Other People’s Children”), which is about making a connection with a child that isn’t your own and stars Virginie Efira, Roschdy Zem and Chiara Mastroianni, is deemed to have secured an official Venice selection slot, as is Alice Diop’s fiction feature debut “Saint Omer” based on the true story of a Senegalese woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. Alice Diop’s doc “Nous” won the Golden Bear award for best documentary film and best film in Berlin’s “Encounters” category in 2021.

 

From Italy, and also shot in Italy, Emanuele Crialese’s Penelope Cruz-starrer “L’Immensita” is a strong possibility, while Gianni Amelio’s “Il Signore Delle Formiche,” a biopic of Italian poet, playwright and director Aldo Braibanti, who was jailed in 1968 due to a Fascist-era anti-gay law, starring Elio Germano and Luigi Lo Cascio, which is firmly ensconced in a Venice berth.

I mean, I could be totally wrong and most of the established classics will be back in play, like they always have been. However, I fear that the canonical silent films are going to be very out-of-fashion according to this poll. I'm not even super confident in SUNRISE, to be honest. I could see this as the first poll without any silent film in the top 10. BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN suffers from horrible timing on the world stage in 2022. PASSION/JOAN OF ARC is probably top 10-20 still but... will the newest crop of voters be into Dreyer? Hard to say, me thinks.

 

Tarkovsky was the only filmmaker to have 3 films represented in the top 30, so it's probably foolish NOT to predict him for a top 10 placement--the thinking being, his popularity and visibility grew immensely between 2002-2012 but consensus didn't quite form around which film was his supreme masterpiece... or there wasn't any organizing from Tarkovsky fans on what they should vote for to get him towards the top of the list. This time out, I think consensus will consolidate around MIRROR, and I do think fans may vote strategically!

 

About the newest crop of films that could appear or jump up, from the 21st century: I feel most confident in IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE making a top 10 play, and decently confident in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. I know the Lynch consistently beats out the Wong in polls... except, of course, in the last S&S poll, where IN THE MOOD was a few spots higher (though both were in the top 30). Given that the polling median age will be a lot younger (or so I think?), I'm betting on a top 10 spot for both, but would only put serious money on IN THE MOOD...

 

I also think that while there will be (is?) a strong push for female filmmakers to be represented in the upper echelons of the canon, I can really only see a significant top 10 play for JEANNE DIELMAN. It came in at a rather surprising #36 last time (I'm not even sure it was top 50 before that?), and Akerman's passing in the last 10 years probably catapults this even further up. I AM thinking top 10, when all is said and done. I feel like if people are going to explicitly go for gender parity on their list or at least ensure they have 1 female filmmaker represented, this feels like the most natural choice: a bold choice, a great filmmaker with a long career, and a film that has stood the test of time. (I also think it's super deserving of a top 10 spot, so... hopefully I'm not being too biased.) The only other top 100 placement for a female filmmaker in 2012 was BEAU TRAVAIL, which I think will jump up many spots but I have a harder time envisioning that in the top 20.

 

Regarding non-white filmmakers from around the world, it gets trickier and more depressing. I mean, Asian cinema of all kinds has usually been represented well, though traditionally only from east Asian countries and Japan mostly at that. Filmmakers from Iran, and specifically Abbas Kiarostami, should make a higher impression on this year's list. Kiarostami's passing in 2016 probably means that CLOSE-UP, his highest ranking film in 2012, will go even further up the list. I'm predicting top 20-30, I think top 10 is out of reach but certainly doable. PARASITE was so zeitgeist-y and it's not like our social climate around the world has changed like, at all, so a top 10-20 placement is absolutely in play. But non-white filmmakers outside of Asia... yeah, depressing. PATHER PANCHALI could see a big bump into the top 20. Maybe even top 10. If the system still allowed voting across multi-film projects, the Apu trilogy would absolutely land in top 20 now, no question. But as such, PATHER is the best hope. TOUKI BOUKI was in the top 100 last time, and will jump spots. I'm not sure about consensus around Sembene's best film, though I suppose BLACK GIRL makes the most sense. Among American non-white filmmakers, MOONLIGHT has an okay shot. DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST may jump into the top 100, but that also feels like a stretch. Am I forgetting other things with a good shot? In Latin and South America, I'm not sensing any super strong new contenders, sadly.

все-таки финальный топ s&s меня меньше всего волнует, скорее всего ожидается сухая копирка прошлого, как это обычно бывает. весь смак в индивидуальных поллах, конечно же, — посмотреть, кто участвовал, какие фильмы для кого важны, все вот эти задротские штуки.
