All films that checked out those boxes got nominated for at least one Oscar and only Incendies did not win (Foreign Film), so Everything Everywhere All At Once looks like a safe bet for having at least some important noms... The Dark Knight would have been BP nominated if more than 5 slots, and everyone else got nominated for BP either the big one or Animated or Foreign... I think we may have the first semi-lock of the year, already, it can fail for the nom only if A24 messes the campaign.

 

I saw Everything Everywhere on Friday. That movie on the one hand should be all over this column.

 

On the other hand, after the last few years especially.....I just don't know. The film seems too.....ambitious. Going too much for an artistic home run. Too much of a risk taker.

 

The movie is like the OPPOSITE of Coda. Good God, it's preposterous even mentioning the two movies in the same sentence. You have this genre hopping triumph of tone, a daring approach of story structure (something I'm a total sucker for ala Pulp Fiction), incredible editing, and then on the other hand, you've got this Hallmark movie...

 

The one thing I have is my instincts. And they almost always lead me down a certain path, the path of, i really think a movie is bonkers and could or should WIN, and it NEVER DOES. It's way WAY too early to even think about it really, but my instinct says i'm going to think more and more highly of the movie going forward, which is a bell weather for an Oscar loss...but I do think it will be discussed all year long.

 

Next year's Oscars will be a SWEEP for Everything Everywhere All At Once

Best Actor: Ke Huy Quan

Best Supporting Actress: Jamie Lee Curtis

Best Costumes, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup, Best Sound, Best Production Design

 

I think it can win, and maybe even sweep, specially after something as safe as CODA... on a preferential ballot, certainly EEAAO seems like a movie nobody hates and everybody loves. Yeoh and Curtis are so overdue for recognition that they both seem bullettproof contenders for nominations, Shu would have a more difficult time, despite being so singled out... and James Hong has to struggle for a nomination due to the fact that Ke Huy Quan probably would be pushed as Supporting to make his narrative (comeback after retiring due to the lack of roles for Asian actors, and being an iconic child actor) quite irresistible, but this kind of role may be not the most suited for Lead but a slamdunk for Supporting. Out of all the actors, I think he has the best shot at actually winning - if going Supporting - and then Yeoh, and then Curtis.

 

But key to check out the actual shot at BP (for the win) is that it REALLY looks like it could win Original Screenplay AND Film Editing, plus have 1-3 acting nominations AND a Best Director nomination... plus some good shots at technicals like Production Design, Make Up, Cinematography, Costume and Sound... we're talking that it is a film that can go up to 10-12 nominations if the film is championed at the end of the year and it is universally loved rather than just respected. At this point, without more films to see, it is the one to beat. But can it hold the lead all the way? I doubt it, there will be other films coming and stealing the limelight, so the intelligent strategy for A24 to have a winner and sweeper would be timing, let people breath and not push this one too much but just keep it "warm" throughout the year and double dip on promotion when Awards season kicks off.

Cannes Film Festival Predictions Include ‘Lightyear,’ New Films By David Lynch, David Cronenberg

 

 

Here are selected films expected to world premiere in this year’s Official Selection:

 

“Crimes of the Future”

Director: David Cronenberg

Stars: Lea Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen

The science-fiction thriller would mark Cronenberg’s comeback to the Croisette eight years after “Maps to the Stars.” The film, which reunites Cronenberg and Mortensen, who last worked together on “A Dangerous Method,” is set in a not-so-distant future where humans have evolved beyond their natural state. According to some insiders who have seen the film, it’s Cronenberg’s most divisive and sultry film. Sources say to expect walk-outs in the last quarter of the film.

 

“Elvis”

Director: Baz Luhrmann

Stars: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, Natasha Bassett

Cannes has confirmed that the film will world premiere at the festival. Luhrmann opened Cannes with a bang with “Moulin Rouge!” in 2001 and “The Great Gatsby” in 2013, but this anticipated drama headlined by Austin Butler as The King can’t open the festival because of its June 24 release date. The festival has had a new rule in recent years which requires the opening night movie to premiere in French theaters on the same day.

 

“Top Gun: Maverick”

Director: Joseph Kosinski

Stars: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly

This is the “planetary blockbuster” Thierry Fremaux has been dreaming of since 2020. The movie is now slotted for a May 18 world premiere at Cannes. Tom Cruise will be on the ground for the gala screening and will be celebrated with a special event and a masterclass. “Top Gun: Maverick” was previously in the pipeline to open at the festival in 2020 before the festival’s physical edition was scrapped due to the pandemic. After several delays, Paramount has now dated the film for May 27.

 

“Three Thousand Years of Longing”

Director: George Miller

Stars: Tilda Swinton, Idris Elba

This film, which has been under the radar, is an epic fantasy romance. It’s a smaller yet ambitious movie by Miller, a Cannes regular. He even served as jury president in 2016 and his latest film “Mad Max: Fury Road” played at the fest in 2015.

 

“Showing Up”

Director: Kelly Reichardt

Stars: Michelle Williams, John Magaro, James Le Gros

The A24 film portrays Williams as an artist on the verge of a career-changing exhibition. Reichardt, who was last in competition with another Williams-fronted film, “Wendy and Lucy,” could be one of the several women directors to be featured in the lineup.

 

Mystery David Lynch movie

The feature could either be a standalone movie that the “Mulholland Drive” helmer shot under the radar or an extended pilot of his upcoming series “Wisteria” which is rumored to star Lynch regulars including Laura Dern and Naomi Watts.

 

“Lightyear”

Director: Angus MacLane

Voice cast: Taika Waititi, Chris Evans, Keke Palmer

“Lightyear,” Pixar’s upcoming origin story of “Toy Story” favorite character, is expected to world premiere out of competition at the festival, continuing the long tradition of Disney/Pixar family-friendly movies which have opened at Cannes. Although the festival is a primary showcase for auteur movies worldwide, it’s also proven to be a glossy launchpad for animated blockbusters, notably “Up,” which even opened the fest in 2009, and “Inside Out” in 2015.

 

“L’immensita”

Director: Emanuele Crialese

Stars: Penelope Cruz

Cruz, who’s just earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in Pedro Almodovar’s Cannes-premiering “Parallel Mothers,” stars in this 1970s-set Italian movie directed by Crialese, the critically acclaimed helmer of “Respiro.” The Path233; movie, which has been submitted to Cannes, delivers an intimate portrait of a family in the 1970s, depicting Italian society at a turning point.

 

“Scarlet”

Director: Pietro Marcello

Stars: Louis Garrel, Noemie Lvovsky

Along with Emanuele Crialese, Pietro Marcello is another Italian filmmaker expected in the main lineup, possibly in competition. A French-language drama weaving musical and fantasy elements, “Scarlet” is a period movie set between the two world wars, in Normandy, and follows the journey of a young woman who was raised by her father and strives to find her own path in life.

 

“Broker”

Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda

Stars: Song Kang-ho (“Parasite”), Bae Doona (“Cloud Atlas,” “The Host”), Gang Dong-won (“Peninsula,” “The Priests”).

Kore-eda, who was last at Cannes in 2018 with his Palme d’Or-winning “Shoplifters,” is expected to return with his Korean-language debut, “Baby, Box, Broker.” The film follows a group of individuals who cross paths in a world where boxes are left out for people to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies.

 

“Love Life”

Director: Koji Fukada

Stars: Fumino Kimura

Set in contemporary Japan, “Love Life” follows a happily married woman who decides to care for her son’s long-lost father when he reappears, deaf, ill and homeless. Fukada previously won the jury prize at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard with his 2016 movie “Harmonium,” and his latest film “The Real Thing” was part of Cannes 2020’s Official Selection.

 

“Decision to Leave”

Director: Park Chan-wook

Stars: Tang Wei (“Lust, Caution,” “Black Hat”) and Korean actor Park Hye-il (“The Host”)

The celebrated Korean director of “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden” is expected at Cannes with this new film which turns on a diligent detective who is investigating a possible murder case in the mountainous countryside.

 

“Holy Spider”

Director: Ali Abbasi

The film is inspired by the true story of a family man who embarked on his own religious quest, to “cleanse” the holy Iranian city of Mashhad of immoral and corrupt street prostitutes.

 

“Boy From Heaven”

Director: Tarik Saleh

Stars: Tawfeek Barhom, Fares Fares

The Swedish-Egyptian helmer, who won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize with his 2017 film “The Nile Hilton Incident,” could turn up in competition with “Boy From Heaven,” a religious and thriller thriller. Set in Cairo, the film takes place at a Koranic school following the collapse of a grand imam which marks the start of a ruthless battle for influence.

 

“Les cinq Diable”

Director: Lea Mysius

Stars: Adele Exarchopoulos, Daphne Patakia, Noee Abita

The movie follows a young woman, Vicky, who lives with her parents and welcomes back her aunt after her release from prison. Her presence brings back the past in a violent, magical way.

 

“Brother and Sister”

Director: Arnaud Desplechin

Stars: Marion Cotillard, Melvil Poupaud

Cotillard and Poupaud star as Alice and Louis, a pair of estranged siblings who haven’t seen each other for 20 years and come face to face after the death of their parents. A Cannes regular, Desplechin was at the festival last year with “Deception” which played in the Cannes premiere.

 

“Tori et Lokita”

Director: Luc Dardenne, Jean-Pierre Dardenne

The two-time Palme d’Or-winning brothers are expected to return to the Croisette with their latest politically-minded film which follows the friendship between two young refugees from Africa who become exiled in Belgium. The Dardennes brothers were last in Cannes with their 2019 film “Ahmed” which revolved around a young man getting radicalized.

 

“Tchaikovsky’s Wife”

Director: Kirill Serebrennikov

Set in 19th century Russia, the movie might prove controversial as it sheds light on the tumultuous relationship between Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the most famous Russian composer of all time, and his wife Antonina Miliukova. The iconoclastic Russian helmer had his last two films, “Leto” and “Petrov’s Flu,” play in competition at Cannes but wasn’t able to leave Russia and attend the premieres due to a travel ban.

 

“Triangle of Sadness”

Director: Ruben Ostlund

Stars: Woody Harrelson

Ostlund, who won Cannes’ Palme d’Or with his last film “The Square” in 2017, wrapped shooting his ambitious satire “Triangle of Sadness” a year and a half ago and is currently working on trimming his three-hour cut. Starring Harrelson as a rabid Marxist who is the captain of a cruise for the super-rich, the movie was shot on a deserted island in Greece and on board the Christina O, a prestigious yacht whose passengers have included Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe.

David Lynch Confirmed For Cannes

 

 

Variety’s Elsa Keslassy has confirmed what readers of this site already knew: David Lynch will be at Cannes with a new feature-length film. :idea:

 

No, it’s not a TV series or any sort of short, I’m being told it’s a feature-length film. End of story. I do not know if it will be part of the official competition, but it’s Lynch, how can you deny the master a slot?

 

I just found out there’s a great American male director in competition that absolutely nobody predicted (and I’m not talking about Aster, or Lynch) nor am I referring to some Venice hopefuls (Schrader, Chazelle, Field).

Good As Gold: A First Look at the Best Picture Race for 2022

It’s kind of crazy to think that the man who brought us such classics as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., The Color Purple, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, etc, etc, etc…. has only had ONE film win Best Picture. It’s also been 24 years since he won his second, and most recent, Best Director Oscar. Might be time to give the man a well-earned third statue if the film is good enough. That being said, other director autobiopics (that’s an actual word, look it up) like Roma and Belfast have been strong contenders in the Picture race only to fall short in the end. At a certain point, will AMPAS members grow tired of this kind of project that could potentially be seen as self-indulgent?

5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – Can you imagine a showdown between two living legends Scorsese vs Spielberg? That just writes its own narrative. If you thought Spielberg only having one Picture win and two Director wins felt wrong, Scorsese has just one Picture and one Director. Both men make my Mount Rushmore of directors (alongside Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick). Giants, these two. Scorsese reteaming with the two men he has worked with so often – DiCaprio and De Niro – is reason enough to think the film will be a strong player. And considering the team at Apple recently won Picture with CODA, we know the movie is in good hands.

5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – Damien Chazelle burst onto the scene as a 29-year-old wunderkind in 2014 with Whiplash, and has only gone on to make perfect films from there (La La Land and First Man). Babylon is the film I am most excited about this year – but it is not a personal bias that sees Chazelle standing next to the likes of Spielberg and Scorsese. Chazelle’s three films have garnered 23 nominations and 10 wins. Chazelle won Best Director for La La Land, becoming the youngest Director winner of all time (32 years, 38 days). So aside my love for the young auteur, what’s to say he finds success here again? First of all, the subject matter. If AMPAS has proven anything, it’s that they love movies about themselves (think: The Artist, Argo, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, etc). How can they resist a throwback to the golden age of the silver screen? Especially with that cast!

5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – Very little is known about the film, but one look at that cast and you can imagine it will be widely talked about if nothing else. David O. Russell has been nominated five times, including thrice for Director (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle). Russell had a hell of a stretch from 2010-2013, garnering Best Picture nominees for each of his efforts in that four-year span (25 nominations between the three). While it’s been a few years – with a few misfires in between – a David O. Russell film usually produces some magnificent performances. It is inarguable that he gets the best out of his cast. If you add Joy to the mix, he has helped produce TWELVE acting nominations among those four films (and three wins)! This will likely be an actor’s showcase, and with the Actor’s branch making up a good chunk of the Academy, watch for it to land in the Picture conversation as well.

 

She Said

5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – The subject matter (Harvey Weinstein) is extremely sensitive and likely touches – in a varying level of degrees, both directly and indirectly – a good number of members in AMPAS. I could see a world where this is our Picture/Director/Lead Actress winner as a result.

My bet is Baumbach, who scored six nominations for Netflix with Marriage Story in 2019, will once again have their best shot at the top prize.

5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – What happens when you put Colin Firth together with Olivia Colman in a love story? We all fall in love with them, that’s what. Sam Mendes is one of my favorite directors working today. His amazing WWI drama, 1917, topped my list in 2019, and I am very excited to see what he does with his two brilliant leads.

Based on the novel by Camille DeAngelis, it sounds like a heartbreaking journey of self-discovery, something Guadagnino has proven he can masterfully tell.
   

 

Women Talking

3. Cast – Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Frances McDormand, Claire Foy, and Ben Wishaw
   
4. Plot summary – A group of women in an isolated Mennonite religious colony in Bolivia as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a string of sexual assaults committed by the colony’s men. (IMDB)
   
5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – It’s crazy to think it has been ten years since Polley’s brilliant masterpiece, Stories We Tell. It’s even more unbelievable that Stories was her most recent directorial effort. Aside from Stories, Polley’s Take This Waltz and Away From Her add to a resume that would have me incredibly excited about whatever she is working on next. Look for this film to show up in several above-the-line categories, most likely in the Lead and Supporting Actress races.
   

 

Poor Things

3. Cast – Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Mark Ruffalo, Kathryn Hunter, Jerrod Carmichael, and Christopher Abbott
   
4. Plot summary – The film will be a Victorian tale of love, discovery and scientific daring, Poor Things tells the incredible story of Belle Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist. (IMDB)
   
5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – Lanthimos’ The Favourite was nominated for ten Oscars and won Lead Actress for Olivia Colman. The Greek filmmaker is back with another period-piece, this time with a science-fiction twist. I imagine this will play well in Production Design, Costumes, Hair and Makeup, and with Lanthimos’ creativity, that’s just the start. Note that there are a couple of actors – Dafoe and Ruffalo – who are very well overdue for a win. Might Lanthimos do for them what he was able to help Colman achieve with The Favourite?
   

 

Everything Everywhere All At Once

4. Plot summary – An aging Chinese immigrant is swept up in an insane adventure, where she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led. (IMDB)
   
5. Gut Analysis/Timeliness – Can the critics keep this film afloat and in the conversation for the next ten months? That is the biggest drawback with predicting a film released in March. Especially one so absurd and profound as this one. Will Academy members allow it the time it needs to unfold to see its full bloom? I saw several older couples walking out about halfway through the movie, so I am not sure. I could see this one being turned off ten minutes in at a lot of home screenings. If anything, AMPAS has all the time in the year to revisit it. God, I can’t stop thinking about this movie. Maybe this is my wishful thinking spot. Either way, what a gift this movie is, and while it isn’t the type of film that often gets in, my hopes are the younger and more international members put it at the top of their list. A preferential ballot could help a movie like Everything Everywhere All At Once, where passion is often what makes or breaks a film.

Оскар для Мишель Уильямс видится мне разумным прогнозом на данный момент. Актеры Спилберга трижды выигрывали за последний десяток лет (ДДЛ, Райлэнс, ДеБос). И Мишель там играет маму пацана, т.е. это примерно та роль, что была у Патрисии Аркетт в "Отрочестве". По идее, ее еще и молодить/старить будут, ибо фильм не снимали 12 лет, в отличие от.
