I want to ask you about some upcoming films. You have Greta Gerwig adapting C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books. Why did you decide to make that deal? What about her as a filmmaker made you feel like that was a good fit with that material?

 

Greta’s been a friend for a while. Her husband, [director] Noah Baumbach, we’re close to, we’ve made I think three films. We’re starting another one. We have a big deal with them. If you don’t know her, she’s truly one of the greatest people, not an artist, but a human being. She’s just got this great soul. When we had [2019’s] ‘Marriage Story’ and she had ‘Little Women,’ we all spent quite a bit of time on the awards trail together at dinners.

 

[Gerwig] grew up in a Christian background. The C.S. Lewis books are very much based in Christianity. And so we just started talking about it. And like I said earlier, we don’t have IP, so when we had the opportunity [to license] those books or the [Roald Dahl Co.] we’ve jumped at it, to have stories that people recognize and the ability to tell those stories. So it was just a great opportunity and I’m so thrilled that she’s working on it with us and I’m just thrilled to be in business with her. And she’s just an incredible talent.

 

Is she writing many of these adaptations? What is her commitment to this?

 

Obviously, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ is kind of the preeminent one, but there’s such an interesting narrative form [to the Narnia series] if you read all of them. And so that’s what she’s working on now with [producer] Amy Pascal and trying to figure out how they can break the whole arc of all of it.

Discussions between Netflix, Imax and Gerwig, who has been a driving force on the issue, are preliminary at this stage, the people said. A deal may not happen. If an agreement solidifies, it would be Imax’s first deal for a theatrical window for a Netflix feature film.

Ничего себе! Не знала, что планируется новая экранизация. Имеющаяся мне в целом неплохо зашла. 1 и 3 фильм хорошо, на втором я засыпала, и со очередной попытки - то же самое. Много классных актеров, Нисон в озвучке Аслана прям идеально  но меня дико напрягала Анна Попплуэлл. Ну, не то чтобы именно напрягала, но когда в 3 фильме Люси целыми днями сокрушается, что она не такая красавица, как сестра, у меня одна эмоция - да ты прикалываешься. Понимаю, что дело вкуса, но, имхо, может, не страшная, но уж красавицу я реально не знаю, где можно рассмотреть. Если погуглить обеих в обычной жизни с мейкапом, так "Люси" посимпатичнее будет.

В общем, не то чтобы сильно жду, но посмотрим, кто закастят, а то, может, как Анну Болейн, что видишь выбор, ну и ладно.

Heard that multiple studios (Disney & Universal) gave a strong opinion about IMAX screens being utilized for non-theatrical Netflix. Theaters weren't on board either. I think the project is DOA and that Greta will exit soon.

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Release Plans Finally Revealed

Netflix co-C.E.O. Ted Sarandos has finally and officially agreed to an exclusive Imax run for Greta Gerwig’s big-budget Narnia movie, based on the Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. Netflix tells me the film will hit about 1,000 Imax screens worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2026 and will not appear on Netflix until Christmas. That’s a four-week window of global exclusivity, though Imax has only guaranteed to play the film for two weeks. A third week could be added based on demand, and there’s a chance the movie could go to some non-Imax theaters before it drops on Netflix. Plus—and this was a key concession—Netflix has committed to market the Imax release like a typical theatrical tentpole movie and identify Narnia as a “Netflix/Imax” title from the outset. Gerwig will shoot the movie using both Imax and regular cameras for the dual release.

 

A big, precedent-setting deal months in the making, negotiated mostly between Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria, Imax C.E.O. Rich Gelfond, and Gerwig and her team at UTA and the Johnson Shapiro law firm. Multiple stakeholders weighed in, including theater owners, who initially weren’t thrilled at the prospect of an Imax theatrical exclusive but came around once they understood that the alternative was no theaters. But the big yes was from Sarandos, whose desire to placate a major filmmaker ultimately trumped his religious aversion to the multiplex (beyond the streamer’s token awards-qualifying and promo runs).

 

To me, this seems like a win-win; Ted can distinguish Narnia as merely an Imax aberration/stunt, in the process pleasing a red-hot director (and her producers: Amy Pascal, Mark Gordon, and Vincent Sieber) at a time when Netflix has lost a few big projects over the theaters issue, while “eventizing” a piece of I.P. that Netflix hopes will become a major franchise for the service. And Gerwig gets a guaranteed theatrical release in 90 countries for her Barbie follow-up (China censors must first clear the movie, and France has its own windowing rules), plus marketing muscle that Netflix films often go without, as well as the chance to create a cultural moment that extends beyond the walled garden of Netflix. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery played in 700 theaters for five days over Thanksgiving 2022 before arriving on Netflix for Christmas. Gerwig did much better than that for her Narnia. The only question now is: Which other filmmakers will demand and receive the “Greta treatment”?
