I think quarantine, especially for creatives, has forced us all to think about our work differently. What was it like shooting Malcolm & Marie during that time?

 

It was an incredible experience. I'd been talking to Sam [Levinson, the creator of Euphoria] often during the quarantine. Sometimes he'd just call to shoot the shit and chat about life. And eventually I said to him, "I need to do something creative." So we bounced ideas back and forth, and then he started writing. Sam reached out to John David [Washington] about wanting to be a part of the project, so we fronted our own money and put it together ourselves. Our crew was a very small group of people who are also from Euphoria. And the No. 1 thing was safety. Everyone had to quarantine and get tested in order to shoot in isolation. We created our own little bubble and made sure that once we were in, we couldn't leave. We were able to workshop and rehearse together — it was very much like a play. I did my own hair and makeup and dressed in my own clothes. And then we shot in black and white on film, so we'll see how it turns out. I think we were able to create something really special. And I'm grateful that we learned how to do it on our own.

Netflix is hoping the pandemic, during which Malcolm & Marie was made, will be reduced to such a point where they can give this one the full red carpet treatment insiders say it deserves.

Ahead of Friday's SAG Awards submission deadline, a decision has been made to release Sam Levinson's Malcolm & Marie — a two-hander which stars BlacKkKlansman and Tenet actor John David Washington and Euphoria actress Zendaya — into the current awards season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

 

Netflix, which acquired the black-and-white film for $30 million in September following a screening of select footage which resulted in bidding war between several distributors, will release it worldwide on its streaming platform on Feb. 5, 2021, and plans to wage a full-fledged Oscar campaign on its behalf.

 

Malcolm & Marie — which Levinson wrote and directed, and which has been likened to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? — tells the story of a director (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) whose relationship is tested after they return home from the premiere of his latest project and await the critical response to it.

 

The film was shot in 35 mm over the summer at Feldman Architecture’s Caterpillar House in Carmel, Cal., using a bare-bones crew due to the pandemic. The production teamed with doctors and lawyers to make sure that every aspect of their work was fully compliant with WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA approvals and COVID-19 safety protocols.

 

Levinson is also a producer of the film, while Zendaya (who today appears on the 50th anniversary cover of Essence magazine) and Washington are executive producers, as is rapper Kid Cudi and Yariv Milchan, the son of Oscar-nominated producer Arnon Milchan.

 

Levinson and Zendaya previously worked together on Euphoria, the HBO program for which the latter won this year's best actress in a drama series Emmy. Levinson and Washington, meanwhile, are second-generation members of revered Hollywood families — Levinson is the son of Oscar winner Barry Levinson and Washington is the son of Oscar winner Denzel Washington — as is one of the co-producers, Levinson's sister Ashley Levinson, and one of the co-executive producers, Washington's sister Katia Washington.

 

The second-gen Levinsons and Kevin Turen produced the film through their production company, which is also behind another 2020-2021 Netflix awards hopeful, Pieces of a Woman.

Another partner of yours is Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. You two were among the first to find a way to adapt and make a film, Malcolm & Marie, when the pandemic first shut Hollywood down. What was that experience like, and how did it help you cope with the quarantine?

 

It was a dream, because I’ve always wanted to be able to just strip everything away. I love what I do—and like most people, I was finding ways to stay inspired and stay creative, and luckily I know people who are the same way. It was great sitting in a room with John David Washington, Marcell Rev and Sam, literally writing scenes as we went, coming up with ideas as we moved through the characters, and finding new things every day. That was the coolest part. That is why I do this.

 

I was very excited—and maybe slightly jealous— to see John David Washington was playing your romantic lead. You both are in such exciting places in your careers.

 

I was just lucky to share the stage with John David Washington, who is brilliant. He’s extremely talented and such a force. Being able to work across from him definitely pushed me to be better. It was very special.
