Maria Speth’s 217-minute documentary Mr. Bachmann and His Class taps into the space where knowledge is collaboratively constructed, not transferred, and stays there, basking in its magic from start to finish. Speth contemplatively trains her camera on an elementary school class, composed of child immigrants, in the provincial German town of Stadtallendorf. Dieter Bachmann is their maestro, not master, conducting the quiet spectacle of progressive pedagogy with the most tender of grips.

On display are mild culture clashes, linguistic barriers, inquiries into religious differences, debates about values and ethics, and many, many musical performances. Among the dozen or so 12-to-14-year-old students he teaches, a mini-society has formed, with the promise of greater understanding for all in the future. This is one of the most hopeful movies you’re likely to see anytime soon.

Radu Jude’s Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn is every bit as strange and overstuffed as its title. The film is a kind of fire sale of Jude’s observations on everything from life during the Covid-19 pandemic to Romania’s dark history of fascism. Its dominant theme is the socially constructed nature of obscenity, explored through the story of a school teacher, Emi (Katia Pascariu), dealing with the potentially career-ending fallout that ensues after a raunchy sex tape she filmed with her husband is leaked online. This premise might have served as the basis for a mainstream sex farce—a point that’s winkingly acknowledged by the film’s subtitle, “A Sketch for a Popular Film”—but Jude takes it primarily as a jumping-off point for some playful formal experimentation and bitterly satirical jabs at Romanian society.

One of those films that either make a jury swoon or get completely ignored by it, Radu Jude’s more than aptly (including the loony part) titled Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn revisits some of the director’s main themes, packing them into a feature that switches with great gusto from porn to philosophical collage and a chorus of idiots. Bad Luck Banging... may or may not win something big in competition at the Berlinale, but it is definitely a must-see, as there are few features more stimulating or more able to emulate the craziness the entire world has been facing during the pandemic.

Deadline

Bad Luck Banging is a tonally uneven watch, set in a messy, confused place where incidental characters range from the convincing to the surreal. It inflicts the information overload it depicts in an almost sadistic fashion. But it’s also thought-provoking, well performed and states its case remarkably clearly, given the amount of dildos on display.

With Petite Maman, a tiny little marvel premiering in the Berlinale's main competition, one does feel eight years old all over again, with all the associated perks and limitations, and scared of a black panther – or was it just a shadow? – lurking next to the bed at night. Or trying to forget all about the Critters franchise, not to mention their tendency to form a flesh-eating ball, but it's all fine now, thanks. And thank you, Celine Sciamma, for bringing that back somehow.

Германо-грузинский фильм хвалят, один из главных претендентов на большой приз, похоже.

A heartening sign of the kind of movie—idiosyncratic, surprising, youthful, romantic—that this year's Berlinale has chosen to spotlight in the main competition, Alexandre Koberidze’s second film, What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? is a true delight. A substantial yet effortless work, and only the second film by Koberdize, following his audacious four-hour debut, Let the Summer Never Come Again, it confirms the Georgian director as a major talent.

The directorial approach borrows elements from silent movies, 1970s cinema in the broadest sense (think giallo, Altman, Elio Petri, Kurosawa, Parajanov – but then again, this whole list may be wrong and just a result of one person's interpretation), observational documentary (the passage of time signalled by non-ordinary images of ordinary people), and who knows what else. But almost incredibly, Koberidze wraps it all into a warm, coherent and, ultimately, romantic film that keeps you surprised and happy throughout its 150 minutes of running time.

Когда фильм называется «Что мы видим, когда мы смотрим на небо?» и идет два с половиной часа, это редко хороший знак для зрителя. Впрочем, опасения в данном случае оправдываются лишь отчасти. «Что мы видим?», грузинский участник основного конкурса, — второй полный метр Александра Коберидзе, 36-летнего выпускника немецкой киноакадемии.

 

И это, соответственно, такой кавказский вариант «берлинской школы» — вдумчивое созерцательное кино, но с элементами магического реализма, нездоровым интересом к футболу и нехарактерным оптимизмом. Завязка следующая: молодой футболист и девушка-медик столкнулись на улице, влюбились с первого взгляда и договорились о свидании в уличной кафешке на следующий день, но попали под действие проклятия, и оба проснулись с совершенно другой внешностью. И, стало быть, друг друга не узнали; девушка тогда устроилась в эту кафешку, а парень в ста метрах от нее стал драть деньги с желающих провисеть две минуты на турнике. Параллельно начинается чемпионат мира (тоже какой-то фантастический, судя по сводкам оттуда), где все болеют за Аргентину.

 

Можно сказать, что это очень неторопливый ромком, причем любят не герои друг друга, а автор — сразу все: город Кутаиси, кинематограф (про силу которого есть отдельная сюжетная линия), Лионеля Месси, бабушкины хачапури. Что-то в фильме раздражает, иногда сильно: киношные меташутки и заигрывания со зрителем, страшно пижонская манера кадрировать, как бы милые (на самом деле не особенно) сказочные детали: собаки, футбольные фанаты, говорящий водосток и так далее. А с другой стороны, все такое красивое, все такие красивые, и кадры, особенно ночные, порой правда такие изумительные, и сонное течение этой жизни кое-где подхвачено так умело, что раздражение сразу проглатываешь.

Сьямму, конечно, жаль, но всех не наградить, лайнап сильный, судя по всему, вышел, многих хвалят.

Безумно рад за Хамагути, которому наконец че-то крупное отвалили. Руиспалашиосу тоже что-то дали. Док звучит скучновато, но у него одни из самых высоких оценок, много восторгов. Жуде обычно, как минимум, интересный. Выглядит, кстати, вот так

Смелый главный приз. Годная раздача.

Круть, недавно читал похвалы фильму, а он мишку взял-)

Respect.

"Румынское порно" от прекрасного режиссера (посмотрите хотя бы его "Варваров") для нашей страны, в смысле России, будет особенно актуальным. Ведь почти такой же маразм у нас и в реальности творился, все эти истории об учительницах, сфоткавшихся в купальнике, которых увидели дети, ужас, ужас.

Пока один из самых ожидаемых фильмов года, конечно.
