Multiple sources indicate that shooting in Oklahoma has wrapped on Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a motion picture project that brought Academy Award-winning actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro here for filming.

 

Principal photography on “Killers of the Flower Moon” began in April, according to an announcement that month by the Oklahoma Film + Music Office and Apple Original Films. In the months since, scenes were shot primarily in Pawhuska, parts of which were remade to resemble the Fairfax, Oklahoma, of 100 years ago, but shooting also took place at other locales, including Fairfax and Tulsa.

Filming has officially wrapped for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

 

The presence of background extras in costume, 1920s automobiles and the ever-present film crew wearing N95 face masks are gone. The sightings of the film’s all-star cast will have to wait for the premiere, which is most likely to be in the fall of 2022.

 

"The producers and the entire cast and crew of Killers of the Flower Moon want to thank the Osage Nation for their great cooperation and participation in the making of the film. It has been a true honor and a privilege to work hand in hand with the community these many months, and we are grateful and happy that everyone has been so welcoming and accommodating," according to a statement from the film’s producers.

 

An Apple Original Film, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is based on David Grann’s best-selling book of the same name. It’s the story of the Osage Reign of Terror and the FBI investigation into the ring of criminals who systematically murdered Osages for their oil wealth in the 1920s.

 

The film employed Osages in all aspects of production, as well as Osage actors and background extras. An Osage News article is forthcoming about the Osage crew members who worked on the film and changed their career paths to the film industry.

 

The community watched in awe as downtown Pawhuska was transformed into 1920s Fairfax. In conversations with crew members, many were honored to work on a Scorsese production, and many were respectful of the story that was being told.

 

The film’s journey began in 2017 when Imperative Entertainment bought the rights to Grann’s bestselling novel. In 2018, Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese signed on to direct and Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio signed on to star. In 2019, Scorsese met with Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear and the Grayhorse community and the announcement was made that Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro had joined the cast. Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the world shut down for nearly a year. However, news of the film’s growing cast was shared exclusively with the Osage News and drew the attention of the world.

 

Film crew began trickling into Bartlesville and Pawhuska in January of 2021 and kept coming. Then, on April 15, filming began with a blessing and a prayer song on the set from the Osage Nation.

 

Five months later, and just as quickly as filming began, it has gone. Reshoots will most likely take place in New York, according to a set source.

 

“Working in Pawhuska over the past two years has been a terrific experience! The leadership of the Osage Nation, Osage County and the City of Pawhuska, as well as the merchants on Kihekah Ave. and Main St. were incredibly supportive,” said Mike Fantasia, Supervising Location Manager. “I've worked in many small towns in my career, and never have I enjoyed such a great relationship for so long a period of time as here in Osage County. Everyone we encountered has been supportive, and for that, everyone on the production is thankful."

I haven’t read KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON but interesting to note that Jesse Plemons says on WTF he enters the story halfway through. So not the lead as had been reported?

 

Depends on how Roth structured the script but it’s basically the lead in the book. And the role Leo was gonna play, but he wanted to take on a more complex secondary character (which has no doubt been beefed up now).

 

Scorsese said they changed perspectives in the adaption

 

Figured. Last I talked to Roth he was going back into it after Leo's switch.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is David Grann’s non-fiction investigation of a series of murders that plagued the Osage people during the 1920s after oil was discovered on their land. You’re dealing with history.

 

Well, I’ve done that before in “Munich” and when Michael Mann and I did “Ali;” I’ve done that kind of bio. But this was a unique story that I knew nothing about. It showed my ignorance. I thought, “It’s unbelievable, it could be a Western.” Marty’s never done a Western. It’s the first time you’ll see a street scene where there’s 90 percent Native American indigenous people, and 1 or 2 percent Caucasians.

 

He showed me early on a clunky, dated movie called “The FBI Story,” with Jimmy Stewart: three cases from the FBI files, and this was one of them. They had an oil well in the middle of the street. I felt it might have a feeling of this, and so I utilize a lot of Western tropes for it. Marty lets you go far afield. He doesn’t mind exploring whatever way creatively you want to do things and so I had a lot of E-ticket rides. I don’t know what are left.

 

Was this the longest script then?

 

Marty doesn’t mind things being long; he encourages that. But it’s more than him figuring it out; he’s telling you what he wants. And he steers you, says “I love this and this, but can we try this?” And I was happy. I came up with an incredible way to do the end credits, which you’ve never seen. He wrote me a text the other day: “I’m going to shoot our end credits in a couple days.” I was so happy that he’s doing that.

 

Did you visit the Oklahoma set?

 

I’ve got a lot of underlying conditions. With Covid I would have had to go into quarantine for 10 days. Marty needed to focus on what he was doing, it was a huge task. We talked all the time and still do. It was one of the my great experiences, so I hope the movie’s good.

 

When is “Killers of the Flower Moon” actually coming out?

 

When you’d assume: next November. I’ve heard he’s well on his way to getting the editing done.
