Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa will easily finish in first place this weekend. Sources tell BoxOffice that the raunchy comedy is looking at around $28 million based on early Friday grosses. If word of mouth stays strong, then Bad Grandpa could easily hit $30 million.

 

Gravity looks to be on pace for $21 million. The space flick's run in first place will finally come to an end after ruling the box office for three straight weekends. A $21 million haul will be good enough to push Gravity past the $200 million mark in North America.

 

The Counselor proves yet again that A-list stars do not guarantee strong box office results. The 20th Century Fox drama is headed for an underwhelming debut of $11 million.

This fourth moronic Jackass movie was outselling R-rated comedies like We’re The Millers and This Is The End at the same point in their online pre-sales cycles. So it was no surprise that Thursday 9 PM late shows and Friday midnight screenings grossed a gigantic $1.4 million included in Friday’s $11.5M total for Paramount’s Jackass: Bad Grandpa. Hollywood knows never to underestimate the taste of the American moviegoing public which gave the comedy a ‘B’ CinemaScore. My sources estimate this crapfest will end the weekend an easy #1 with $27.5M from 3,336 theaters. Though one insider ups the numbers to $12.4M Friday and $32M through Sunday. “Not bad for a film that cost $15M,” a studio exec tells me. It’s now the 3rd or 4th best R-rated comedy opener of the year.

 

Warner Bros’ Gravity fell from atop the domestic box office for 3 straight weeks to #2 and $6.1M Friday for a $20M weekend and nearly $200M domestic cume. In #3 is the Paul Greengrass/Tom Hanks adult drama Captain Phillips entering its 4rd weekend for Sony Pictures with $3.6M Friday and an $11.7M weekend for a new cume of $70M through Sunday.

 

Twentieth Century Fox’s Ridley Scott vanity project The Counselor (3,044 theaters) only opened #4 to a meager $3.2M Friday and $8.6M weekend. Studio claims the cost was only $25M.
