I was so blown away by Kristen Stewart in Pablo Larrain’s Spencer. I went in with ridiculously high expectations & real fears that it was just going to be long walks down long hallways but Kristen Stewart’s performance is incredible. She totally disappears into the role. #TIFF21

The subtext she brings to every moment onscreen and the emotional depths she explores are really something to behold. I found the pain so hard to watch at times. So real and visceral. Hers is a performance that is a frontrunner for Best Actress. Hands down. #TIFF21

Also the fashion is so iconic and the resemblance so uncanny (hello red jacket and veiled hat) that there are moments when I did a double take to see if it was indeed Kristen Stewart or real news footage from the time. #TIFF21

Stewart folds in her body to actualize Diana’s nervousness, tips her head in a familiar way, and gets the princess’ voice pitch-perfect. But beyond that, her performance comes down to the eyes. Stewart’s eyes swing like switchblades through the grass. And each glance claims another victim, displaying either a kind of forlornness or a shyness, depending on the situation. It’s her eyes that jump her over the line of performance to a totally lived-in aura. There’s never a moment where it’s Kristen Stewart as Diana. She is Diana.

What Kristen Stewart is doing in SPENCER is *extraordinary* but hear how she’s supported by Greenwood and his sturdy baroque waltz (he even adapts it to a church service), which he then undermines with skittering jazz cymbals and orchestral smears. This is psychology.
